Periodontal Plastic Surgery

Periodontal Plastic Surgery refers to techniques utilized in order to re-establish gingival symmetry and/or restore mucogingival defects. Usually the procedures can help accomplishing a perfect smile and boosting the patients confidence. The procedures performed are usually done through gingival augmentation, correction of recession or soft tissue deformities, or enhancement of oral esthetics.

Some of the problems that can be corrected through periodontal plastic surgery are:

Long teeth / Exposed roots (Gingival Recession)

Several reasons can lead to gingival recession making your teeth look longer than they are. This situation under certain circumstances can possibly lead to: Hypersensitivity of the tooth, inappropriate oral hygiene and inflammation, unaesthetic appearance, and even tooth loss.
Gingival (gum) graft surgery and other root coverage procedures are designed to cover exposed roots, to reduce further gingival recession and to protect vulnerable roots from decay.

Gummy Smile

A lot of people display a large amount of gingival tissue upon their smile. In relation to that their teeth look short and square. This presents major esthetic problem that affects their appearance upon smiling. The teeth may actually be the proper length, but they are covered with excess gingival tissue. Esthetic crown lengthening is a procedure performed to reduce excess gingiva and bone tissues to expose more of the natural tooth. This can be done to one tooth, to even your gingival line, or to several teeth to expose a natural smile.

Gingival asymmetry

An asymmetrical gingival tissue will make your teeth and smile look asymmetrical. Procedures like gingivectomy and gingivoplasty are used to reduce and reshape excessive gingival tissue. These procedures involve the removal and sculpting of your gingival tissue to improve the appearance and to facilitate a better oral hygiene.

High Frenum Attachment

A frenum consists of muscle fibers and other tissue components. When these muscle fibers attach too close to the neck of the tooth, they can potentially cause problems like gingival recession, pain upon tooth brushing and in cases of patients undergoing orthodontic treatment, they can even interfere with the desired tooth movement.

A Frenectomy is a very simple procedure where the tissue and muscle fibers are surgically removed.

Combination of esthetic procedures (full mouth reconstruction)

Sometimes many esthetic problems may be present in your mouth. This may require several different types of procedures to accomplish, in collaboration with your dentist, to build successfully a framework for your perfect smile.
