Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last teeth to develop, appearing between the ages of 17 and 25. When a tooth is unable to fully enter the mouth, it is said to be impacted: there is simply not enough room for it to break through the gums. Nine out of ten people have at least one impacted wisdom tooth.
Left in place, impacted wisdom teeth may damage neighboring teeth or become infected. Because the third molar area is difficult to clean, it invites the bacteria that lead to gum disease, and oral bacteria can travel through the bloodstream and contribute to systemic illness. Research shows that once periodontal disease is established in the third molar area, it is persistent and progressive, but may improve following extraction.
In some cases a fluid-filled cyst or tumor can form around the base of an untreated wisdom tooth, hollowing the jaw and damaging surrounding nerves and teeth as it grows.
Since there is rarely a functional need for wisdom teeth, extraction is usually recommended when they are considered prone to develop problems. The procedure is performed with local anesthesia, careful surgical technique and clear after-care instructions.
